Critical Mass Nairobi

kids Right to Play! a Celebration of our 4th Toto Mass!🚴‍♀️

A Day of Joy and Community -

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Critical Mass Nairobi with our 4th kids’ Critical Mass—Toto Mass. It was an absolute success, boasting the largest turnout of enthusiastic young cyclists yet. The air buzzed with excitement as children, along with their parents and caregivers, enjoyed a day filled with more than just our usual city centre ride. This event featured an exciting twist—cycling activities and games at the Children's Traffic Park, leaving the kids absolutely thrilled.

We were led by Mr. Travis Otieno, one of our lead marshals and a recent graduate of Computer and Information Science from Strathmore University. Travis also serves as our sign language communicator, ensuring our events are inclusive and accessible to all. His leadership was instrumental in making the day run smoothly, and his commitment to inclusivity is something we deeply appreciate.

We were honoured to have Peninah Ndegwa, an Urban Planner and founder of WowMom Kenya, join us. She delivered a compelling speech on the crucial role of public spaces in children's development. Peninah highlighted the necessity for parents and caregivers to push for more accessible public spaces, which are vital for the mental and physical health of children, enhancing their quality of life.

The Right to Play and Nature

Nairobi, as one of Africa’s burgeoning metropolises, faces a stark shortage of free, accessible public spaces. Every child deserves the right to play and engage with nature, which are essential for their development and well-being. This is a key developmental aspect underlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly Articles 31 and 12 which advocate for the rights to leisure, play, and participation in cultural and artistic activities.

Critical Mass Nairobi's Commitment

Looking forward, Critical Mass Nairobi commits to continue championing these causes by:

  • Continuously organising and promoting events like Toto that not only introduce children to the joys of cycling but also integrate them into a community that values active play.

  • Advocating for urban planning policies that prioritise children's recreational areas.

  • Collaborating with local authorities and organisations to enhance the accessibility and safety of public spaces.

The Community Impact

Events like Toto Mass do more than just entertain; they build a sense of community and shared purpose. They remind us that social interactions in safe environments are beneficial not just for the individual children, but for the entire community. Such initiatives can strengthen community bonds and foster a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect among diverse groups.

Gratitude and Looking Forward

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this day memorable, especially the Critical Mass Nairobi team of marshals—the heart of CMN—who ensure our rides are safe and enjoyable. Special thanks also go to the Nairobi Area Traffic for providing VIP security to the little ones, which delighted the kids, and to the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) for granting access to the Traffic Park.

As we look forward to future rides, we remain dedicated to nurturing a healthier, more connected community through cycling and active engagement in our city’s public spaces. We are already eagerly anticipating our next ride and continue to be inspired by the community’s support and enthusiasm.

Let’s keep pedalling towards a future where every child in Nairobi has a safe, accessible place to play and learn.
