Ride Kenya: Bicycle Training Program

Critical Mass Nairobi, in partnership with Ebee, is proud to introduce the Ride Kenya: Bicycle Training Program—a transformative initiative designed to break barriers, build skills, and create a cycling culture that’s accessible to all.

This program isn’t just about teaching people how to ride; it’s about rewriting the narrative around cycling in Kenya. For too long, cultural norms, lack of access, and safety concerns have kept many Kenyans—especially women and youth—off bicycles. Ride Kenya is here to change that.

Starting in Nairobi and Mombasa, this initiative is a bold step toward creating a greener, healthier, and more inclusive future where cycling is not just a mode of transport but a way of life.

Why Ride Kenya?

Cycling is more than a way to get around—it’s a tool for empowerment, sustainability, and well-being. The Ride Kenya Bicycle Training Program offers:

  • Essential Cycling Skills: From balancing and control to group riding techniques, we empower participants to become confident, independent cyclists.

  • Breaking Barriers: Many Kenyans were never taught to cycle due to societal stereotypes or financial constraints. This program provides a safe, supportive space for anyone—at any age—to learn.

  • Navigating Traffic: One of the most critical aspects of the training is taking participants out on the streets to teach them how to navigate traffic confidently. We don’t just teach people how to pedal—we empower them to become active cyclists who can safely share the road.

  • Road Safety Awareness: Comprehensive training on traffic rules, signaling, and safe cycling practices ensures that participants can ride confidently on Kenya’s roads.

  • E-Mobility Introduction: Discover the potential of electric bicycles (e-bikes) as a sustainable solution for longer commutes and urban mobility.

  • Physical and Mental Wellness: Cycling boosts fitness, reduces stress, and promotes mental well-being, creating healthier individuals and communities.

Program Features

  1. Structured Training Classes

    • Beginner Classes: Focus on balancing, control, and understanding basic road safety.

    • Intermediate & Advanced Classes: Develop endurance, master group riding, and navigate urban environments confidently.

    • E-Bike Training: Learn to ride and maintain e-bikes, offering a low-emission alternative for longer commutes.

  2. Real-Life Traffic Training

    • Our program doesn’t stop at teaching how to pedal. Participants are taken out onto the streets in supervised sessions to gain hands-on experience navigating traffic. This crucial part of the training ensures they develop the confidence and skills to become active cyclists in real-world conditions.

  3. Inclusivity and Accessibility

    • We are committed to removing barriers to cycling through our Scholarship Fund, providing bicycles, safety gear, and training for participants who need financial support.

    • Your contributions to this fund help ensure that cycling becomes a reality for everyone, regardless of background.

  4. Safe Learning Environments

    • All training sessions are held in secure, accessible venues provided by Ebee, ensuring participants can focus on building their skills without worry.

  5. Flexible Scheduling

    • Participants can easily register online, select convenient schedules, and enjoy a seamless training experience.

Why This Matters

Kenya is facing urgent urban mobility challenges, including congestion, pollution, and a lack of safe transport options. The Ride Kenya Bicycle Training Program is tackling these issues by:

  • Improving Accessibility: Cycling offers a low-cost, reliable transport option, especially for underserved communities.

  • Reducing Emissions: Encouraging more cyclists reduces the reliance on motorized vehicles, leading to cleaner air and less congestion.

  • Promoting Health and Wellness: Regular cycling fosters active lifestyles, improves mental health, and reduces the risk of lifestyle diseases.

  • Empowering Communities: The program creates opportunities for trainers, marshals, and participants, building a network of cycling advocates across Kenya.

This initiative also supports key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

  • SDG 13: Climate Action.

The Untapped Potential

Cycling has often been viewed as either a childhood activity or a transport mode for a select few. Yet, there’s a large community of people in Kenya who’ve never had the chance to ride—not because they didn’t want to, but because of:

  • Lack of Access: Many never had a bicycle growing up or couldn’t afford one.

  • Cultural Norms: Societal stereotypes discouraged women and girls from cycling.

  • Safety Concerns: Without proper training or infrastructure, cycling often felt too risky.

Ride Kenya bridges this gap, providing opportunities for:

  • Women to break societal barriers and embrace cycling as a form of empowerment.

  • Youth and adults to gain a valuable life skill that promotes independence.

  • Communities to embrace cycling as a sustainable and practical transport solution.

By equipping participants with skills, confidence, and knowledge—including how to navigate traffic—this program is transforming cycling into a practical, sustainable reality for all.
